Loco pilots who run high-speed trains like Vande Bharat are counted among the most skilled employees of Indian Railways. They take full care of the safety, speed, control and convenience of the passengers of the train. From starting the engine of the train to stopping it exactly on the platform, every responsibility is in the hands of the loco pilot.
What is the qualification?
To run Vande Bharat train, first of all you have to become a loco pilot in Indian Railways. For this it is necessary to have passed at least 10th class. Along with this, one should also have ITI from a recognized institute. Preference is given to candidates doing courses in Electrical, Mechanical, Fitter or Motor Mechanic trade in ITI.
Initially the candidates are appointed as Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP). After that, promotion is available on the basis of experience and performance. These assistants later become senior loco pilots and then pilots of premium trains like Vande Bharat.
What is the selection process like?
To become a loco pilot, Assistant Loco Pilot examination is conducted by Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). There are three main stages in this. In the written examination (CBT), questions are asked from Reasoning, Mathematics, Science, and General Knowledge. Successful candidates are tested for eyesight, reflexes and fitness. Selected candidates are given intensive training for a few months in the training institute of the Railways.
What happens after training?
After completion of training, the new pilot is first given the responsibility of driving a goods train. Its purpose is to enable the loco pilot to have a complete understanding of the functioning of the engine and the condition of the track. Passenger trains are given only after a few years of experience and good performance and then pilots who have the best record get a chance to operate high-speed trains like Vande Bharat, Tejas and Rajdhani Express.
