Family parties have always dominated the politics of the country, but there have been many occasions when incidents of conflict and disunity within these families have come to light. The latest case is of Lalu family in Bihar. Here Tej Pratap had already been shown the way out of the party. Now after RJD’s crushing defeat in Bihar assembly elections, Lalu’s daughter Rohini Acharya has also announced to leave the party. This is not just the story of Lalu Yadav’s family, in the past also many big political families from UP to Haryana, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Telangana have struggled with internal battles.

Mulayam Singh Yadav family: Akhilesh vs Shivpal tussle

The most talked about family dispute in the politics of Uttar Pradesh was seen in the Mulayam Singh Yadav family. In 2016, the conflict between Akhilesh Yadav and his uncle Shivpal Yadav came to the fore. Father Mulayam Singh tried many times for reconciliation, but things did not work out and Shivpal formed his own separate party – Progressive Samajwadi Party. However, after the death of ‘Netaji’, Akhilesh convinced uncle Shivpal and then Shivpal merged his party with SP.

Apart from this, Mulayam Singh’s younger daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav left Samajwadi Party and joined BJP in 2022. Aparna took membership at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, which clearly showed that BJP presented it as a national level achievement. Everyone knew for a long time that Aparna and her husband Prateek Yadav did not get along with Akhilesh Yadav. Aparna did not hold any special post in SP, had contested only one election and even then she was seen mixing with BJP leaders and praising PM Modi.

OP Chautala family: Political division between two brothers

The politics of Chautala family in Haryana has been suffering from divisions for a long time. After breaking from INLD, Ajay Chautala and his sons formed Jannayak Janata Party (JJP). Dushyant Chautala also became the Deputy CM, while OP Chautala remained busy in keeping INLD alive. In 2018, the inheritance fight started in the Chautala family and it also affected INLD. Om Prakash Chautala and his elder son Ajay Chautala separated.

Ajay separated from INLD and formed Jannayak Janata Party (JJP). In the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections, JJP won 10 out of 90 seats and Ajay’s son Dushyant Chautala emerged as the kingmaker. BJP formed the government with JJP and Dushyant became the Deputy CM. Although JJP could not win even a single seat in the Lok Sabha elections, the alliance still continued. But the alliance of BJP and JJP broke even before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. After this Manohar Lal Khattar resigned and Naib Singh Saini became the new CM. After the break of the alliance, Dushyant Chautala also had to leave the post of Deputy CM.

Sharad Pawar family: Nephew’s rebellion in Maharashtra

In the year 2023, Maharashtra politics was shaken when Sharad Pawar’s nephew Ajit Pawar broke the NCP and became the Deputy Chief Minister in the BJP-Shinde government. Sharad Pawar is now fighting to save his ‘real NCP’. In fact, it was discussed many times in the political circles that Sharad Pawar wanted to hand over the command of the party to his daughter Supriya Sule, about which Ajit Pawar was not happy.

Gandhi family: Maneka Gandhi was out

After the death of Sanjay Gandhi, his wife Maneka Gandhi also separated from the Gandhi family. Later, she also became MP and Union Minister several times on BJP ticket. However, in the 2024 elections he had to face defeat from Sultanpur seat. Maneka Gandhi’s son Varun Gandhi has also been an MP on BJP ticket.

Thackeray family: Old rift between Uddhav and Raj

Thackeray family of Maharashtra also divided into two parts. Raj Thackeray left Shiv Sena and formed Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Later in 2022, there was another major breakdown when Eknath Shinde separated a large part of Shiv Sena and became the Chief Minister. Uddhav Thackeray is still busy saving his group. However, now the closeness between Raj and Uddhav is once again increasing.

Karunanidhi family: Old dispute between Stalin-Alagiri

There was also a tussle between the sons of DMK chief Karunanidhi in Tamil Nadu. MK Stalin was made the heir of the party, due to which elder brother MK Alagiri was angry. The bitterness between the brothers grew so much that Alagiri was thrown out of the party.

KCR family: Discussion of division in the fight for power

Ever since KCR’s party lost the assembly elections in Telangana, everything is not going well in his family. The command of the party is in the hands of KCR’s son KTR. He had joined the cabinet when his father was the CM. He took care of his sister. Kavita was thrown out of the party, after which Kavita has formed her own separate party.

Jharkhand’s Soren family: Tension over power and leadership

There was a split in Shibu Soren’s family in Jharkhand. Political differences between Hemant Soren and his brother Basant Soren came to the fore many times. Shibu Soren always tried to keep the family united, but this tension is continuously visible in power politics. Durga Soren, Hemant Soren and Basant Soren are the names of Shibu Soren’s sons. Of these, Durga Soren has died and his wife is Sita Soren, who has joined BJP and BJP had also made her contest the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 from Dumka seat, in which she lost by about 22 thousand votes.
