Air Pollution Protection: At present the air in Delhi is very polluted, the level of air quality index has reached 600 in many areas. This is considered a very dangerous level. Doctors are advising many people to spend a few days outside. People are being advised to go out as little as possible and if they do, then go out wearing a mask.
In an Instagram post shared on October 5, Dr Sonia Goyal, who has been treating lung diseases for the last five years, explained whether face masks really protect against pollution.
Do masks really protect from pollution?
Dr. Goyal says that we all wear masks in the hope of protecting ourselves from pollution, but few people know their real effectiveness. He says that every mask is not the same. If you think that any mask, whether surgical, N95 or KN95, is enough to protect you from pollution, then this is the right time to clear your misconception. It is important to know which mask can really protect you from the microscopic particles present in the air.
What is the benefit of surgical mask?
Dr. Goyal says, “Surgical or cloth masks block large particles, but very fine and dangerous particles like PM2.5 easily pass through them.” That means when AQI is very bad, then these masks do not provide adequate protection.
N95/KN95 mask is most effective
According to him, N95 or KN95 masks are the best option. “These masks are designed to filter out 95 percent of PM2.5, smoke and fine particles in the air. But they are effective only when worn with a proper fit, with the nose clip set properly and with no gaps at the edges.” How long the mask works also matters; just wearing a mask is not enough. “Masks tend to trap moisture and dirt over time, reducing their effectiveness. If you spend extended periods of time outdoors in high pollution, it’s important to replace your mask regularly.” His advice is that some other precautions should also be taken along with the mask.
Keep these things in mind also
Dr. Goyal suggests that mask alone is not enough. Also do this:
- Avoid going out during peak traffic hours
- Stay indoors when the air is extremely bad
- Use air purifier at home/office
- Plant indoor plants that improve the air
- Children, elderly and sick people should take special care
