Indian captain Shubman Gill on Monday opposed the proposal to make ODI cricket 40 overs, saying that to make this format more attractive, triangular and quadrangular tournaments should be organized instead of bilateral series.
There is a constant debate going on about the future of ODI cricket amidst the increasing influence of T20 cricket and franchise leagues. Recently, during the ICC annual meeting in Edinburgh, the possibility of reducing ODI from 50 overs to 40 overs was discussed.
“I don’t think ODIs should be made 40 overs,” Gill said ahead of the three-match ODI series against England starting on Tuesday.
Gill said, “Earlier we used to play a lot of triangular series and it was very fun to watch them. Teams like India, Australia and Sri Lanka used to play in Australia. You played not just against one team, but against two different teams on different grounds.
He said, “If ODI cricket is to be made more interesting, then instead of bilateral series, triangular or perhaps quadrangular series should be organised. This will make this format more interesting for both players and spectators.
This 26-year-old player said that for him the 50-over World Cup is still the most prestigious competition in cricket. He said, “The most cricket I have seen in my childhood was 50 overs. Whenever the name of World Cup comes, the first thing that comes to mind is the 50 over World Cup. If I have to win any one World Cup, it will have to be the 50-over World Cup.

Gill said that the current ODI series against England is very important for the preparations for the World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2027.
He said, “Preparation for the World Cup is very important for us. Similar conditions can be found here also as are found in South Africa. So we want to test which team combination will be best for us. In this respect this series is very important.
Gill said, “As a captain, every series from now on will be important for me. Whatever experience and learning I get till the World Cup, it will be very useful in future.
Gill admitted that the team management had to make changes in the playing eleven due to injuries to Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana. “We were a little unlucky,” he said. Reddy got injured before the series and Rana is also not available. We wanted these players to play as many matches as possible before the World Cup so that they get experience. For this reason we had to come out with a different combination, but it does not mean that our team is unstable.
