The first sign of uric acid is sudden, severe pain in one of the joints, often starting in the big toe. This pain may start suddenly at night and may feel like a prick. This pain is caused by accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joint and causing swelling. This pain can also be felt in ankles, knees, elbows and fingers.

Swelling of joints is also common in gout, which causes changes in the skin. In this the skin may appear red and it may be accompanied by swelling. It may also feel hot when touched. This red, swollen skin can make the joints appear larger or swollen than normal. This is a response to inflammation caused by uric acid crystals. Sometimes the skin becomes so tight that even a light touch causes pain.

Many researches show that stiffness and loss of functionality in joints indicates problems related to gout and uric acid. This symptom often appears just before the pain becomes severe. This stiffness usually occurs in the morning and the joints may feel hot. This makes it difficult to move the joint or do daily tasks. This swelling occurs due to the irritation of uric acid crystals.

At the same time, high level of uric acid can change the texture of urine. In this, urine may appear cloudy or dark and urine may also smell bad. Along with this, a burning sensation may also be felt during urination. This happens because high uric acid can cause kidney stones. In case of stones, symptoms like pain in the back or side, vomiting and frequent urination can also be seen.

Feeling warmth or burning in the joint can be a sign of high uric acid levels. In this, the joint may feel warmer than the rest of the body and this indicates inflammation before the pain starts. At the same time, uric acid crystals irritate the tissues, causing them to swell. Regarding this, doctors advise that mild pain or discomfort in the foot or ankle should not be ignored.
