Providing good health facilities to rural and remote areas of India has always been a big challenge. Especially in case of a serious disease like TB, where only timely diagnosis and treatment can save life. To solve this problem, a very wonderful and modern initiative has been taken in Telangana.
Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has launched drone service in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district of Telangana to make TB testing easier, faster and cheaper. This initiative was taken in collaboration with All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bibinagar. Let us understand how this technology is changing the life of the common man?

It is noteworthy that patients living in villages earlier had to go to big hospitals or testing centers in the city to get their TB tested. His entire day was wasted in this. Money was spent on travel and sometimes daily wages were also lost.
According to statistics, earlier a patient had to spend an average of ₹ 9451 for testing, but now with the introduction of drone service, this expense has come down to just ₹ 91. Patients now give their sputum samples at a small health center near their home and from there the drone transports these samples by air to larger testing centers. Due to this, both money and effort of the patients are being saved.
15 days work now in 5 days
In the treatment of TB, the most important thing is to detect the disease early. Earlier, it used to take up to 15 days for the samples from distant villages to reach the lab and then for the report to come back to the village. There was a fear that the patient’s condition would worsen due to such a long wait.
Drone technology has directly reduced this time from 15 days to just 5 days. The latest report shows that more than 76 percent of patients are getting their test results the very next day. Early arrival of reports simply means that the patient’s treatment can start quickly, which is most important to save his life.
How does this system work?
This scheme has been implemented in a planned manner. A main control center has been set up at AIIMS Bibinagar, which is directly connected to 11 primary health centers and 60 small sub-centres of the district. Drones fly within this network, which in medical language is called hub and spoke model. Under this, samples are collected from small centers and they are rapidly transported to the main lab.
Drone is also bringing medicines
This drone service is not limited to just sending samples. When the patient’s report comes positive at the main center and doctors prescribe medicine, the same drone also delivers essential TB medicines to remote villages in the return flight. This means that the patient does not need to run to the city even to get the medicine. The medicine flies from the sky and reaches the health center of his village.
