Tension increased in Bara district of Nepal, adjacent to India, on Wednesday when Gen-Z youth and ousted Prime Minister K.P. There was a clash between workers of Sharma Oli’s party CPN-UML. Seeing the situation, the administration imposed curfew in the area. Bara district administration said that there will be curfew within 500 meters of Simara Airport from 12:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

Protest and clash at the airport
The clash took place when the Buddha Air plane was about to take off from Kathmandu for Simara carrying CPN-UML leader general secretary Shankar Pokharel and youth leader Mahesh Basnet. Both the leaders had to address an anti-government rally. As soon as the news of Simara’s arrival spread, a large number of Gen-Z protesters gathered at the airport to protest, where they clashed with CPN-UML supporters.

Flights canceled, leaders returned
Following the clash, Buddha Airlines canceled all domestic flights from Kathmandu-Simara. This also included the flight that was to carry both the CPN-UML leaders. Due to increasing tension both the leaders returned. Let us tell you that Gen-Z are those youth who were born between 1997 and 2012. They are also called ‘digital natives’ because they have grown up in the era of internet and smartphones.

What is UML?
UML i.e. Nepal Communist Party (Unified Marxist-Leninist) is one of the major political parties of Nepal. This party is based on leftist ideology and has been playing an important role in Nepal’s politics for a long time. Former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli is the top leader of this party. UML describes itself as an advocate of nationalism, stability and development, but in recent years there has been growing dissatisfaction among the youth, especially Gen-Z, regarding its policies and leadership, which has often led to protests.

Tension increased, security forces deployed
These protests, which started from the beginning of this week, have now become more intense. Heated debates and clashes have taken place at many places between young protesters and UML supporters. To keep the situation under control, security forces have been deployed at many important places in Bara district. The administration is continuously monitoring the situation.
