India vs South Africa ODI series is going to start from 30th November. The first match will be played in Ranchi, but Team India will be missing captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer. Both of them were not selected in the squad for the ODI series against South Africa due to injuries. Now Indian team’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has given an update on the injuries of both.

Update on Shreyas and Gill

Before the first ODI, Morne Morkel said, “I spoke to Shubman Gill two days ago, he is recovering quickly, this is good news to hear.”

Giving an update on Shreyas Iyer’s injury, Morkel said, “Shreyas Iyer has started rehab. We are waiting for both to return to the squad soon. The good thing is that both are healthy and are preparing to return to the team.”

On one hand, Shubman Gill is expected to play in the T20 series against South Africa, which is to start from December 9. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer may have started rehab, but his comeback still seems far away.

How did Gill and Iyer get hurt?

Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury in the first Test match between India and South Africa. Gill suffered a neck strain while playing a sweep shot against Simon Harmer in the first innings of that Test match played in Kolkata. For this reason, he will not be able to play in the second Test and now the ODI series also.

On the other hand, the injury of Iyer was more serious, who suffered an injury on his upper stomach while taking a catch in the ODI match against Australia. Actually, while taking the catch, he fell on the ground on his stomach. Due to this, he started having internal bleeding, for this he also had to undergo surgery in Sydney.
