India vs South Africa 1st ODI is being played at Jharkhand State Cricket Association Stadium, Ranchi. In the absence of Temba Bavuma, the command of South Africa is in the hands of Aiden Markram, who won the toss and decided to bowl first. Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, India last won the toss in the 2023 World Cup semi-finals, since then India has not been able to win the toss even in an ODI. This trend continued in Ranchi also.
After the Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma was removed from the captaincy of ODI, Shubman Gill was given the command. Although the streak of losing the toss did not end even under Gill’s captaincy, he is out of this series against South Africa due to injury. Vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is also injured, so KL Rahul is captaining. Even under his captaincy, the sequence of losing the toss did not end.
India lost the toss in the 19th consecutive ODI
The Indian cricket team won the title by defeating New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy played this year. In that entire tournament, India could not win the toss in any match, this trend has been going on since 2023. The last time India won the toss in ODI was against New Zealand, that was the semi-final match of the 2023 World Cup.
India has already broken the unwanted world record of losing consecutive toss. India has lost the toss 19 consecutive times in ODIs. Netherlands team is second in terms of losing the most toss in ODIs, which had lost the toss a total of 11 times between March 18, 2011 and August 27, 2023.
Team India has lost the toss a total of 19 times from November 19, 2023 to now (November 30, 2025).
