How Childbirth Affects Women’s Long-Term Health: Have you ever read or heard that the lifespan of a mother gets reduced after giving birth to a child? Maybe it is possible. Although many of us do not know about it. Records show that sometimes after giving birth to one child, the age of women can reduce by about six months. Especially in those women who are living in difficult or bad conditions, its effect has been seen even more. Let us tell you in detail how much truth is there in this.

What came out in the research?

Researchers working on human evolution studied the records of 4,684 women during the Great Finland Famine between 1866 and 1868. Dr Yuan Yang, a researcher at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, says it was “one of the worst famines in the recent history of Europe”. The team of Dr Yang, Professor Hannah Dugdale, Professor Virpi Looma and Dr Eric Postma found that women’s life expectancy at each childbirth decreased by about six months during those famine years.

What do experts say?

Experts believe that in such difficult circumstances, women used to spend a large part of their energy in conceiving and giving birth to a child, due to which the cells of their body did not get that much strength. This increased the risk of diseases. Interestingly, such an effect on age was not seen in women who had children before or after the famine. Dr. Yang says, “We saw this change only in those women who were of reproductive age when the famine occurred.” According to him, this clearly indicates that the environment has a deep impact on a woman’s health during childbearing years.

Does becoming a mother affect age?

One reason may be that the pressure of having children in difficult circumstances has a greater impact on women’s long-term health. It is already known that mothers have an increased risk of heart diseases and metabolic problems, which are related to weight gain and physical stress.

‘Comparison’ of number and age of children

In this research, it was seen that this effect was more pronounced in women with more children. However, not every woman was affected equally. According to researchers, this situation is more visible when women are giving birth to many children continuously or the circumstances are extremely difficult, such as famine. Now the question is, can the findings based on women of two hundred years ago be applicable to the women of today?

Dr. Yang says that these results have to be understood according to that period. In 2023, on an average a woman was giving birth to slightly more than two children. This change came about due to education, job opportunities, availability of contraceptive means and low rates of child mortality. Dr. Yang says that more research is needed on this topic, but these results show that these things can still apply in some areas of the world.
