‘When America was banning Russian oil companies…’, what did the US media write about the meeting between Putin and PM Modi?

The meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being discussed all over the world. Putin and PM Modi are especially prominent in the American media. The American media house has considered the meeting between PM Modi and President Putin as an important step for India to meet its strategic needs.
American media said that the geographical pressure exerted by America led to the Russian President’s visit to India.

‘What did The Wall Street Journal write?

‘The Wall Street Journal’ says that the meeting of PM Modi and President Putin took place at a time when America was banning Russian oil companies. Because of this, India is buying crude oil at low prices. The India-Russia energy partnership, which has been considered the mainstay of bilateral relations from 2022, is currently under pressure. Indian refiners are being forced to rethink their crude oil procurement strategy after the US took action against traders linked to Rosneft and Lukoil.

American media said that despite this pressure, both the leaders indicated to continue buying and selling of crude oil.

Washington Post described a special moment of India’s foreign policy

Apart from this, Washington Post described this summit as a special moment for India’s foreign policy. According to the Washington Post, this summit was a test of India’s efforts to maintain old relations with Russia, that too at a time when the US is pushing for a peace deal in Ukraine.

Washington Post said that America is continuously putting pressure on India to reduce oil imports from Russia. Earlier this year, President Trump had doubled the tariff on Indian goods to 50 percent.

What did the experts say?

Citing Washington Post, experts said that this visit of the Russian President shows how India is striking a strategic balance between Western countries and other global players. India is now trying to balance its Russia partnership while keeping in mind the important trade interactions with the US and the EU.

New York Times praised both the leaders

The New York Times emphasized the personal rapport between the two leaders and said that PM Modi praised his deep and unbreakable relationship with Putin and compared India-Russia relations to the “North Star”.

The Times said the summit reflected India’s assertion of “strategic autonomy”, even as India’s relations with Washington have deteriorated due to tariffs and Western sanctions, which have sharply reduced India’s crude oil imports from Russia.

Russia increasingly sees India as a bulwark against its “overdependence” on China. American media believes that India is trying to save its energy supply, simultaneously manage pressure from Washington and Europe, and maintain relations with Russia amid global uncertainty.

US reports said that the task ahead for India is to maintain a historic partnership with Russia, as well as keep the doors open to deeper economic and strategic cooperation with the US.

Putin said- strong and necessary pillar

The Russian President, during his address during his visit to India, had said that the shipment of crude oil from Russia to India will continue without any interruption. Putin described PM Modi’s energy security as a “strong and essential pillar” of the relationship.
