Indian Railways is the fourth largest rail network in the world and crores of people travel in it every day. The biggest responsibility of running such a large network safely and on time rests with the train driver i.e. the loco pilot. People are always curious about the salary of drivers working in high-speed trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi and now Vande Bharat. The question often arises that who gets the highest salary? Does the loco pilot of a modern train like Vande Bharat earn the most or do the drivers running on premium routes like Rajdhani-Shatabdi earn more?

Actually, the salary of loco pilots in Indian Railways depends on their route, type of train, experience, grade and overtime. Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Vande Bharat all three come under premium trains. The experience of their loco pilots is also more than that of ordinary mail-express trains, hence their salary is also higher. However, among these three, the highest earning usually goes to the loco pilot of Vande Bharat train, because it is a high-speed train and more training, experience and technical skills are required to run it. After this comes the salary of Rajdhani and then Shatabdi loco pilot.

Loco pilots cannot be made directly

Now the question arises that how do they become loco pilots and how much salary do they get? First of all, know that one cannot become a loco pilot directly. In Railways, candidates are first made Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP). For this, 10th pass along with ITI or Diploma qualification is necessary. The age is kept at 18 to 30 years, whereas reserved categories get relaxation as per rules. After becoming ALP, the candidate gets rigorous training, then from time to time he is given practical experience in the real train. Candidates assume the responsibility of loco pilot only after many years of job and training.

how much salary

Talking about salary, the starting basic pay of Assistant Loco Pilot is Rs 19,900 (Level-2), in which by adding allowances, the in-hand salary becomes around Rs 30,000-35,000. As experience increases, positions also advance. Senior loco pilot can earn Rs 35,000 to Rs 55,000. While the salary of a chief loco pilot reaches Rs 60,000 or more, the in-hand salary of drivers running premium trains is much higher than this.
