After completing MBBS, the biggest question in the mind of every medical student is that how much salary will they get if they get a job. This salary depends on whether the job is in a government or private hospital, in which state the posting is done and how much experience the doctor has. In some states, junior doctors get higher salaries and allowances than in other states.
In which state does a junior doctor get the highest salary?
If we talk about government medical colleges and hospitals, Delhi is among those states and union territories where junior doctors and interns get the best salaries. Here, during internship, a stipend of around Rs 24 thousand to Rs 30 thousand is given. At the same time, the salary of junior resident doctors can be 50 thousand to 80 thousand rupees or more along with allowances. Karnataka is also included among the states giving good salary. Here interns get a stipend of around Rs 25 thousand to Rs 28 thousand. Apart from this, hostels and other facilities are also provided in many government institutions.
How much internship stipend is given in different states?
The stipend received by medical interns is different in every state. Delhi and Karnataka are at the forefront. In Maharashtra, stipend is usually between 20 thousand to 25 thousand rupees. In Tamil Nadu, it is around 18 thousand to 27 thousand rupees. In Kerala, interns get 22 thousand to 25 thousand rupees. In West Bengal, stipend is around 15 thousand to 20 thousand rupees and in Uttar Pradesh, around 12 thousand to 18 thousand rupees are given. In Rajasthan also, there is a provision of getting stipend ranging from Rs 14 thousand to Rs 20 thousand.
What is the salary of a junior doctor in a government hospital?
Junior doctors working after MBBS in government hospitals get salary as per the Seventh Pay Commission. At the initial level, by adding dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other facilities along with the basic pay, the total monthly salary can reach around Rs 1.10 lakh to Rs 1.30 lakh. As experience increases, there is a good increase in promotion and salary.
How much salary do you get in a private hospital?
In private hospitals, the salary is decided according to the hospital and the city. In big hospitals, a new MBBS doctor can get around Rs 60 thousand to Rs 1.20 lakh per month. Many hospitals also give additional incentives based on performance, which further increases the earnings. In small towns and medium level hospitals, the starting salary ranges between Rs 40 thousand to Rs 80 thousand.
What is the difference in earnings of freshers and experienced doctors?
After completing MBBS, the salary of a doctor is relatively low in the initial phase, but after a few years of experience, the salary increases rapidly. Doctors with three to five years of experience can easily earn a monthly salary ranging from Rs 80 thousand to Rs 1.50 lakh or more. If doctors do further studies in any specialisation, their earnings can increase manifold.

Doctor’s salary does not depend only on degree. Many factors like the state where the job is located, government or private hospital, city, experience, type of duty and expertise of the doctor decide the salary. Doctors working in metros are likely to get higher salaries and additional allowances compared to those in smaller cities.

After MBBS, doctors can work in many roles like Junior Resident, Duty Medical Officer, Resident Medical Officer, Medical Officer, Emergency Physician and Tele-consultation Doctor. The salary for these posts varies according to the hospital, experience and location.
