Clubbing is a change in which the heads of the fingers become rounded and the nails appear more curved forward. Experts say that this happens when the body’s megakaryocytes bypass the lungs and reach the fingers and release growth factors there. This change is often seen in chronic lung diseases such as lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis or conditions with prolonged low oxygen such as heart disease. In such a situation, if the fingers suddenly start appearing thick and round, then one should immediately consult a doctor.

Apart from this, Koilonikhia i.e. spoon nails is an early sign of iron deficiency anemia. In this, the nails become so thin that their surface sinks inwards and looks like a spoon. Regarding this, experts say that it could be a sign of iron deficiency, heavy periods, pregnancy, lack of nutrition or some serious disease. The special thing is that these changes in nails sometimes appear months before other symptoms.
