Female Fertility Preservation: Due to career, personal reasons or health related reasons, a large number of women today are postponing motherhood for some time. In such a situation, egg freezing has emerged as an important option for women to preserve fertility. But as soon as it comes to egg freezing, the two medical terms that are heard the most are egg quality and egg quantity. The names are similar, but their meaning and effect are completely different.

Many women feel that if the number of eggs is more then the chances of pregnancy will be more, while some believe that only the quality is enough. But fertility experts say that both are important, although their importance is not equal. Age, lifestyle and reproductive health directly affect egg quality and egg count, so it is very important to take a decision at the right time.

According to Dr. Madhu Goyal, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Fortis Hospital, Greater Kailash, “Understanding the difference between egg quality and quantity helps women to have right expectations and take better decisions.”

What is the real meaning of egg quality?

Egg quality means how healthy the egg is from inside. A good quality egg is one which has the right number of chromosomes so that a healthy embryo can be formed after fertilization. Dr. Madhu Goyal says that after the age of 30, egg quality gradually starts declining. This increases the risk of chromosomal abnormalities, which can affect pregnancy and embryo development. Eggs frozen at an early age not only thaw better, but they also have a higher chance of a successful pregnancy.

What is egg quantity or egg count?

Egg quantity means the number of eggs present in the ovary. This is usually assessed with an anti-Mullerian hormone blood test or ultrasound scan. Although it is normal for the egg count to decrease with age, it is important to note that having more eggs does not mean that they are all healthy. “Sometimes a woman may have a high egg count but poor quality, while some women may have fewer eggs but still be healthy,” she explains.

Quality vs. Quantity: What’s More Important?

In the case of egg freezing, egg quality is considered a little more important. A healthy egg has a greater chance of being fertilized and becoming a proper embryo than many weak eggs. But this does not mean that quantity does not matter. Not every frozen egg survives the thaw process and not every fertilized egg turns into an embryo. This is why doctors often recommend freezing a large number of eggs, so that the chances of success can increase.
