Millions of people are currently struggling in Afghanistan. Where the only means of survival was human help, that too is slowly ending. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in 2025, about 2.29 crore population of Afghanistan, i.e. about half of the country’s population, will need some form of humanitarian assistance. This means that crores of people cannot feed themselves without outside help. The problem is that international funding has been drastically cut. Many countries including America have reduced aid, due to which organizations like the World Food Program are also forced to work with limited resources.
The United Nations food program has warned that about 17 million Afghans are facing severe hunger this winter. This number is more than 30 lakh from last year. Cold, unemployment and inflation have made the situation even worse. The country is already struggling with a weak economy. On top of that, drought, earthquake and return of lakhs of refugees from neighboring countries have made the situation explosive. Resources for food, shelter and treatment are falling short.

A senior UN official recently said that this is the first time in many years that there has been almost no international food distribution in winter. While last year help had reached lakhs of people, this year only a few families could get relief. According to him, only 10 lakh people received food assistance in 2025, whereas in 2024 this assistance reached 56 lakh people. Due to lack of funds, the UN will focus only on 39 lakh most needy people in 2026.
Burden increased due to return of 71 lakh refugees
According to Afghanistan’s Refugee Affairs Minister Abdul Kabir, 71 lakh Afghan refugees have returned to the country in the last four years. Rahimullah is also one of them. He was earlier in the Afghan army. He fled to Pakistan after the Taliban came to power in 2021, but was deported after two years.
