A few days after the FIR was registered in Punjab in the case of disappearance of 328 sacred ‘saroops’ of Guru Granth Sahib, the tone of confrontation between Sikh religious leaders and the state government has intensified on Sunday (28 December). Sikh religious leaders asked the Aam Aadmi Party government to stop interfering in the internal religious affairs of the Sikhs and clearly warned that further action would be taken as per ‘Panthic’ traditions.
Important meeting of Singh Sahibans
Panch Singh Sahiban, i.e. the heads of the five holy thrones of the Sikhs, held an important meeting in the secretariat of Akal Takht Sahib. Issues like the issue of missing Sarups, making films on Sikh subjects and conducting Anand Karaj (Sikh marriages) outside Gurudwaras were discussed in detail in the meeting.
Emphasis on the rights of Shiromani Gurdwara Management Committee
The religious leaders clearly said that the Shiromani Gurdwara Management Committee is a democratically elected religious body of the Sikhs. Under the Indian Constitution, no government can interfere directly or indirectly in the internal affairs of any religion. He said that challenging the administrative rights of SGPC is not acceptable.
Strong objection to FIR
It was told that on December 7, Amritsar Police had registered an FIR against 16 people including the former SGPC secretary in the case of disappearance of Saroop in the year 2020. There is resentment among Sikh organizations regarding this. SGPC says that this step is like challenging the supremacy of Akal Takht. He also said that this kind of interference is not right.
message to the government
The religious leaders bluntly told the Aam Aadmi Party that if the Punjab government does not stop interference, decisions will be taken as per religious norms. He appealed to the Aam Aadmi Party government to exercise restraint and respect Sikh traditions.
