Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi has given a fatwa on celebrating New Year. Maulana has said that celebrating New Year is illegitimate. Dancing, singing, extravagance, lewdness, all things are illegitimate in Islam. Muslim people should maintain distance while celebrating New Year. New Year is a memorable moment for Christians, not for Muslims.
Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, President of All India Muslim Jamaat in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, has expressed his strong opinion regarding the celebration of New Year. He said that on the night of 31st December, people often do things like noise, dancing, singing, partying and wasteful expenditure. This type of behavior is considered wrong and prohibited according to Islamic Shariat.
Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, while talking to news agency ANI, said that in Islam, the new year does not start from January, but from the month of Muharram. Therefore celebrating New Year on the night of 31st December is against Islamic rules. He called it a useless and unnecessary work which is not right in the eyes of religion.
