Jaishankar reached Dhaka to attend Khaleda Zia’s funeral, handed over PM Modi’s letter to Tariq Rehman

Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia will be laid to rest today (31 December 2025) in Bangladesh. On this occasion, representatives of many countries reached Bangladesh. From the Indian side, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also went to Dhaka to attend Zia’s funeral. During this, S Jaishankar handed over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s condolence letter to his son Tariq Rehman.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riyaz Hamidullah posted on Twitter that in Dhaka, Dr. S. Jaishankar expressed condolences on the death of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia on behalf of the people and government of India and acknowledged her contribution to democracy.

Jaishankar’s first visit after Hasina’s departure
This is Jaishankar’s first visit to Bangladesh since Sheikh Hasina left power, which is considered very important amid the ongoing tension between the two countries. As soon as Jaishankar arrived, he met Khaleda Zia’s son and BNP supremo Tariq Rehman.

Did a handshake with Tariq Rehman
Jaishankar has come from India to pay tribute to Khaleda Zia. During the meeting with Tariq Rehman, his daughter Zaima Rehman was also present. During this meeting, Jaishankar and Tariq Rehman also shook hands with each other, pictures of which have surfaced. This meeting and handshake is considered important at a time when tension between Bangladesh and India is at its peak. Pakistan is making strong efforts to infiltrate the relations between the two countries and anti-India activities are taking place openly during the rule of Yunus.
Elections will be held in Bangladesh in February
Let us tell you that Tariq Rehman has returned to his country after 17 years and his party BNP will take part in the elections to be held in February. He is considered one of the strong contenders for the post of Prime Minister of Bangladesh. In such a situation, this initiative of India is being considered as an effort to improve the future of relations with Bangladesh.
