According to the official holiday list of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), bank holidays on New Year’s Day vary from state to state and also depend on local events, customs and celebrations.
In which states banks will remain closed?
- There is no bank holiday in the entire country on Thursday, January 1, the first day of the new year. However, according to RBI guidelines, today there will be bank holidays in Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, West Bengal and Meghalaya. In view of this, banks are going to remain closed in cities like Aizawl, Chennai, Gangtok, Imphal, Itanagar, Kohima, Kolkata and Shillong. In such a situation, customers are advised to make plans first because branch based services will not be available on this day.
- Banks will remain closed in Kerala and Mizoram on January 2 because Mannam Jayanti will be celebrated in Kerala on this day and New Year will be celebrated in Mizoram, hence bank branches in Aizawl, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram will not function on this day.
- There will be a holiday in banks in Uttar Pradesh on January 3 on the occasion of Hazrat Ali’s birthday. Bank branches will remain closed in Lucknow.
- Banks will remain closed across West Bengal on January 12, the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. These also include bank branches of Kolkata.
- Banks will remain closed on January 14 in Assam, Odisha and Arunachal Pradesh for Magh Bihu and Makar Sankranti. In this sequence, there will be no work in banks on this day in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati and Itanagar.
- On January 15, banks will remain closed in cities of South Indian and North-Eastern states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Gangtok on the occasion of Pongal, Makar Sankranti and Uttarayan Punyakal. Banks are going to remain closed on this day in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Vijayawada.
- Thiruvalluvar Day will be celebrated in Tamil Nadu on 16 January. Banks will remain closed in Chennai on this occasion.
- Uzhavar Thirunal will be celebrated in Tamil Nadu on 17 January. Bank branches will remain closed in Chennai on this day.
- On January 23, there will be a bank holiday in West Bengal, Odisha and Tripura on the occasion of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti, Saraswati Puja and Basant Panchami. Banks will remain closed in Agartala, Bhubaneswar, Chennai and Kolkata.
- There will be a bank holiday in the entire country on 26th January due to Republic Day.
