When Did Plastic Surgery Begin: There is an uproar at present regarding plastic surgery. All famous personalities including Bollywood have been accused of plastic surgery from time to time. It is said that people resort to this to look good, beautiful and attractive. Plastic surgery is not a new medical method. Its history is thousands of years old and its earliest evidence comes from ancient Egypt. In the initial period, plastic surgery was especially used to repair the nose. The word ‘plastic surgery’ is derived from the Greek word plasticos, which means to shape or mold. Let us tell you when it started and how it happens initially.

ancient times
According to ramsayhealth, plastic surgery started thousands of years ago in ancient civilizations. Its earliest evidence comes from ancient Egypt, where it was used to repair broken noses. In Egypt, there are examples of improving the appearance of the body even for life after death. In India around 600 BC, the physician Sushruta developed techniques such as nose reconstruction and wrote the basic principles of plastic surgery in the Sushruta Samhita. Later, in the Roman period, simple surgeries like repair of ears and face started being done and this knowledge reached Europe through Arab countries in the medieval period, where new methods of nose surgery were developed.

20th century
Plastic surgery received its modern form during World War I, when there was a need to treat serious facial and body injuries of war-wounded soldiers. During this period, there was major development in techniques like facial reconstruction and skin grafting. The treatment of burnt soldiers during the Second World War gave further progress to this area. By the 1940s, plastic surgery began to be recognized as a separate and valid medical branch, and the establishment of professional organizations increased its scope and credibility.

Modern period
There has been a tremendous change in plastic surgery since the middle of the 20th century. Now its use is not limited to just healing injuries or congenital defects, but has also started being used on a large scale to enhance beauty. Silicone implants, nose and facial surgery, body contouring, as well as non-surgical options such as fillers and laser treatments have become popular. Nowadays rich people are using it openly.
