Causes Of Sudden Unexplained Weight Loss: Sonam Wangchuk, who is on indefinite hunger strike, is continuously losing weight. Friday (July 17) was the 20th day of his hunger strike, after which he was picked up from Jantar Mantar and admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. He has given up food during the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi since June 28. According to doctors, his weight has decreased by 350 grams in the last 24 hours. Now his weight has reduced to 56.55 kg. That means till now his total weight has reduced by about 9.5 kg.

According to the health report released by the medical team, Wangchuk’s blood pressure was recorded at 108/68 mm Hg, blood sugar at 80 mg/dL, pulse rate at 72 per minute and oxygen saturation at 96 percent. What happens to the body when you remain hungry for a long time?

According to a report by BBC Science, one or two days after eating the last meal, the glycogen stored in the liver and muscles in the body almost gets destroyed. After this, the body starts breaking down the stored fat and producing ketones for energy. However, brain and red blood cells cannot function on ketones alone. They need glucose, for which the body starts breaking down muscles. This is the reason that if food is not available for a long time, not only fat but also the essential muscles of the body start becoming weak. Heart muscles are also included in these. If these become extremely weak, the heart may stop working and this condition can become fatal.

How much weight loss is considered fatal?

According to doctors, if a person’s total weight decreases by 40 to 50 percent, then it is considered a serious threat to life, no matter what his initial weight was. In case of complete cessation of food, there can be a risk of death, usually within 8 to 12 weeks. However, if the body gets a few calories and enough protein, a person can live longer because the body keeps using fat for energy.

Rapid weight loss can also increase the risk of death

Recently, a study by Anglia Ruskin University published in BMG Journal Heart also revealed that rapid weight loss or gain in people suffering from obesity and heart disease, both can increase the risk of death. This study, which was conducted on about 8,297 people for about 14 years, found that the risk of heart-related death increased by three times in those whose weight increased by more than 10 kg. At the same time, the risk of death from any cause was found to be 54 percent higher among those who lost more than 10 kilograms.

What do doctors recommend?

Professor Barbara Piersionek, Dr. Rudolf Schutte and Dr. Jufen Zhang of Anglia Ruskin University, who are associated with the study, say that it is very important to maintain stable body weight, especially for obese patients suffering from heart disease.
