While hearing the case of stray dogs on Thursday (January 8, 2026), the Supreme Court said that dogs often attack those who are afraid of them. The judge said that he is saying this from his personal experience. Hearing this from the judge, the dog lovers present in the court started nodding their heads in agreement.
The bench of Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice NV Anjaria is hearing this case. The court is hearing petitions seeking amendment to the earlier orders filed by dog lovers and those demanding strict compliance with the orders.
The court said, ‘A dog always recognizes those people who are afraid of it. Whenever he feels this way towards a person, he attacks them. We are telling this from our personal experience. During this, when the dog lovers started nodding their heads in yes, the bench told them – do not shake your heads. He said that if dogs feel that you are afraid of them, then there is a high possibility that they will attack you. Your pet dog can also do this.
The court made this comment on a matter in which a lawyer said that once a dog has bitten, it should not be left outside. He told that 20 thousand complaints of dog bite have been received on RWA helpline. He said that there is a need to understand the difference between a pet and a stray dog. Stray dogs can be made pets, but it is a problem for those who are dog lovers.
He said that the basic problem is that dogs are very sensitive about their territory and their territory changes after every 200-300 meters. The lawyer said that if there is pasture at a distance of 500 meters, then a dog will have to fight with other dogs to go there because their territory changes every short distance. He said that in such a situation, there will be a problem for the people living where there is pasture because the number of dogs there will increase.
