American military presence in Iraq is going to end after almost 23 years. Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has announced that all American troops will leave Iraq by September 30. He gave this information during the meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington. During this meeting held at the White House, President Trump said that America no longer feels the need to keep its army in Iraq. He said that his government believes that at present there is no need for American military presence there.
America started military operations in Iraq in 2003 and thousands of American soldiers have been deployed there since then. Their numbers have been continuously reduced in recent years. Until recently, there were about 2,500 American soldiers present in Iraq, whose main job was to support the campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS). However, in the last few months the number of soldiers has been further reduced. Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said that after the withdrawal of American troops, his government will take strict action against armed groups in the country. He clearly said that after September 30, no organization or group will be allowed to possess weapons from outside the country or carry out independent military activities.
Signs major agreement between America and Iraq
Ali al-Zaidi said, ‘On September 30, American forces will leave and American companies will come in their place.’ His statement means that instead of military cooperation, economic and trade relations between the two countries will be strengthened. The main objective of Ali al-Zaidi’s visit to America was to promote American investment in Iraq’s oil, gas and energy sector. In the conversation between the two leaders, many important issues regarding economic cooperation were discussed. During the meeting held in the Oval Office, the Iraqi Prime Minister hinted at announcing a new economic partnership between the two countries. He said that in the coming time, big agreements can be made between America and Iraq in the field of trade and investment.
America’s military strength
America’s military power is not limited to its own country, rather its presence is spread in many parts of the world. America has built its military bases from the Asia-Pacific region to Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Through these bases, America operates the security of its allies, global strategic interests and military operations. Japan is considered America’s most important military ally in the Asia-Pacific region. There are major American military bases in Japan like Yokosuka, Kadena, Futenma and Misawa. More than 50 thousand American soldiers are stationed here. These bases are the main basis of America’s strategic power in East Asia and the Pacific region.
American military presence in Europe
America also has a strong military presence in South Korea. Major military bases like Camp Humphreys, Osan Air Base and Kunsan Air Base are located here. In view of the potential threat from North Korea, America has been deploying a large number of troops in South Korea for a long time. Apart from this, America continues to have military access to the Philippines, Australia, Guam and many islands of the Pacific Ocean. The US Army regularly conducts military exercises and strategic activities in these areas. Germany is the largest center of American military presence in Europe. Ramstein Air Base is counted among America’s most important foreign military bases. Apart from this, many other military facilities are also present in Germany, where thousands of American soldiers are deployed. Apart from Germany, America also has a strong military presence in Italy, United Kingdom, Spain, Poland, Romania and other NATO member countries. According to estimates, about 68 thousand American soldiers are deployed across Europe.
