Protests have been going on in Iran for two weeks regarding inflation and falling currency. The demonstrations became more violent on Thursday night (January 8), when Iran’s exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi appealed to people to come out of their homes and demonstrate against the Islamic regime.
Following Reza Pahlavi’s appeal, a large number of people took to the streets. Meanwhile, the Iranian government has deployed security forces to clear the roads. It is being told that large scale demonstrations are taking place in at least 50 cities of Iran. People are coming out on the streets and shouting slogans against the Iranian regime.

The most important thing is that during the demonstrations, slogans are being raised in support of Reza Pahlavi, whereas till now sloganeering in support of Shah was punishable by death. According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, so far 39 people have lost their lives in the violence during the protests, while more than 2,260 people have been detained.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump supported the Iranian people and said that if an attempt is made to suppress their voice, we will not leave. Just before the Islamic Revolution of 1979, the then Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi fled to America. His son and Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi is still living in exile in America.

Local people said that after Pahlavi’s appeal, people came to the streets as soon as 8 o’clock on Thursday night. The protesters started raising slogans of Down with the Islamic Republic. On the other hand, slogans like this is the last fight and Pahlavi will come back were also raised in support of Shah.

Seeing the situation getting out of control, the Iranian government has shut down internet services and also cut telephone lines. Internet monitoring group Net Blocks said that live data showed that connectivity at many service providers was disrupted, leaving many areas in the country offline.
