More energy in diesel fuel
- The biggest reason for the better mileage of a diesel car is the more energy present in diesel fuel. Diesel has more energy per liter than petrol. This means that a diesel engine can cover a greater distance with the same amount of fuel. This is the reason why diesel cars travel longer distances with less fuel and get better mileage. Simply put, diesel fuel is more powerful.

- Diesel engines work at a higher compression ratio than petrol engines. While petrol engines typically run at 8:1 to 12:1 compression, diesel engines use 20:1 or even higher compression. The advantage of higher compression is that the fuel burns more efficiently and completely. When the fuel burns completely, every drop provides more power and the mileage automatically increases.
Compression Ignition Technology
- In petrol engine, spark plug is required to burn the fuel, whereas in diesel engine this process is different. In a diesel engine, the air is pressurized too much, due to which its temperature increases so much that the diesel fuel starts burning automatically. This technology is called compression ignition. Due to this, fuel burns more under control and in a better way, which reduces wastage of fuel and gives more mileage.
