R Rahman is one of the most talented music composers of Bollywood today, but it took him seven years to feel comfortable composing Hindi songs. She made her Bollywood debut with Mani Ratnam’s 1991 romantic thriller ‘Roja’ and worked with him in three films like ‘Roja’, ‘Bombay’ (1995) and ‘Dil Se…’ (1998). He also made his mark with Ram Gopal Varma’s 1995 romantic comedy ‘Rangeela’, which was completely different from Mani Ratnam’s films. The musician has said in an interview that it took him many years to make his place in Bollywood. He also spoke openly about not getting work in the Hindi film industry for the last eight years and also raised questions about the reasons for it.
Didn’t get work from Bollywood for 8 years
While talking to BBC Asian Network, AR Rahman openly expressed his opinion on the current situation of the film industry. He said that he has not got any work from Bollywood for eight years. He said over the past eight years, “control” in music production has shifted away from composers and directors and into the hands of music labels and corporate entities.
AR Rahman said, “Perhaps in the last eight years, there has been a change in power and now power is in the hands of people who are not creative. It may also be related to communal feeling… but it is not directly in front of me. It is heard in whispers to me.”
‘I am not looking for work’
Rehman has also clarified that the recession has not affected his self-esteem or creative peace. Instead of actively taking on projects, they prefer to let work come to them naturally. He said, “They had booked you, but the music company hired five of its own composers.” He added calmly, “I say, it’s good, now I have more time to relax with my family. I am not looking for work. I don’t want to go looking for work. I want work to come to me, my honesty should get me work. I get what I deserve.”

What did Javed Akhtar say on AR Rahman’s claim?
While talking to IANS in Mumbai, famous lyricist Javed Akhtar said that I never felt like this. I live in Mumbai, meet all the people. People respect me a lot. Perhaps people might be thinking that AR Rahman is more busy in the West, devotes more time to shows, hence whether he will come to us or not, Rahman is such a great personality that even small producers may feel hesitant in going to him.
Shaan also reacted?
Bollywood singer Shaan has also reacted to AR Rahman’s statement of not getting work in the Hindi film industry for 8 years. Speaking to IANS, Shaan said that there is no communal aspect in the music industry and also appealed to everyone not to think too much about it. He argued that instead of making such allegations, it is important to ‘do good work’ and ‘make good music’.
Shaan said, “Talking about not getting work, I am standing right here in front of you. I have sung so much over the years, yet sometimes I don’t get work. But I don’t take it personally, because it is a personal matter; everyone has their own thinking and their own preferences… Even if there is such a problem, I don’t think there is any communal or minority aspect in music.”
