Deep concern is being expressed at the international level about the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. At the same time, such violence is already going on in Pakistan. In such a situation, a Hindu advocacy group has warned that the condition of religious minorities in Bangladesh, especially Hindus, has worsened in recent months. This group has appealed to the US Congress and the government to respond more strictly to the increasing violence.
Speaking at an exhibition in Washington, Hindu Action’s Utsav Chakraborty said the organization is working to sensitize members of Congress and staff about the plight of Hindus in South Asia, including Pakistan and Bangladesh, through immersive exhibits, films and direct engagement with lawmakers.
How bad is the situation in Pakistan?
Utsav Chakraborty said that minority Hindus in Pakistan have been the indigenous tribal community there for thousands of years, yet today they have to face kidnapping, forced conversion and trafficking. The number of minority Hindus in Pakistan is barely one and a half percent of the total population. He said, “We have people who are working with refugees in India as well as Hindus in Pakistan. We are trying to save young Hindu girls who are often kidnapped, forced to convert and then trafficked.”
‘About 2.8 million Hindus killed in Bangladesh in 10 months’
Chakraborty reminded that Bangladesh was separated from Pakistan in 1971 and the Pakistani army and radical Islamists allied with Jamaat-e-Islami killed about 2.8 million Hindus in Bangladesh in just 10 months. He warned that the situation has worsened again in the last one and a half years after the political changes in the country. He said, “In the last one and a half years, we have seen that Jamaat-e-Islami has gained a lot of strength in Bangladesh. This group is in a good position to win the elections to be held in a few weeks in February. After the recent change in power, the condition of Hindus has worsened significantly.”
He alleged that Hindus in Bangladesh are being publicly beaten, insulted, killed and then burnt. All this is being done openly to show disgusting and violence. Hindu Action plans to address these concerns at an upcoming congressional briefing, which Chakraborty said is expected to take place around February 10.
American lawmakers did not show sensitivity
Utsav Chakraborty also admitted that American lawmakers have not shown sensitivity to the issue of Hindus in Bangladesh and Pakistan. He said that Congress needs to rise to the occasion and speak more aggressively and with more facts about the atrocities against Hindu minorities in both the countries.
He said, “The lack of adequate attention from the US Congress reflects their weakness and naivety. Hindu Action’s outreach was aimed at filling this gap. We believe that as Hindus in America, we have a role to play in making sure that our lawmakers, our White House, our State Department are aware of what is going on and do our best to make sure that they work to protect these communities.”
