Norovirus Outbreak In China School: After Corona, now another virus has knocked in China. 103 students have been found infected with norovirus in a senior high school located in Foshan city of Guangdong province in South China. Local health officials said Saturday that all students are safe and none of the cases are serious or life-threatening. Norovirus is a virus that causes acute gastroenteritis. Symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain and weakness are usually seen in this. Similar symptoms were recently seen in these students of Xinhui Middle School, whose initial investigation confirmed norovirus infection.
What did the medical department say?
According to the Health Department, the condition of all 103 students is stable. As a precaution, the school premises have been completely disinfected. The health of the students is being constantly monitored and their attendance is also being monitored. Apart from this, epidemiological survey is going on to find out the source of infection. Disease control officials of Guangdong province said that norovirus cases increase here every year between October and March. This virus spreads rapidly especially in cold weather.
What is norovirus?
Norovirus is considered a very common virus throughout the world. About 68.5 crore cases are reported every year, in which approximately 20 crore children under 5 years of age are involved. This virus kills about 2 lakh people every year around the world, of which about 50 thousand are children. Its biggest impact is seen in low-income countries. The global cost of norovirus, including health care and economic losses, has been estimated at approximately $60 billion. The first outbreak of norovirus was recorded in 1968 in Norwalk city of Ohio state, USA. For this reason its initial strain was called “Norwalk virus”.
How does this virus spread?
This virus causes gastroenteritis, which many people call stomach flu in common language. However, it is different from the flu, because the influenza virus causes respiratory disease, not stomach disease. Norovirus usually spreads through dirty food or water. The risk of infection increases due to food touched by the hands of an infected person, undercooked shellfish or vegetables and fruits washed with dirty water. This virus can survive for two weeks on surfaces like door handles, taps, counters.
How can we protect ourselves?
According to the NYT report, there is no effective vaccine for it, so prevention is the biggest vaccine for it. The most important thing for protection is to wash hands frequently with soap and water, hand sanitizer alone is not effective against this virus. Also, bathrooms and frequently touched areas should be cleaned with water mixed with bleach. If someone gets infected, he should rest at home and take plenty of fluids, water, soup and electrolyte drinks are beneficial.
