European Union: The European Union (EU) is seriously considering using its most powerful trade retaliation weapon, known as the ‘trade bazooka’. This step was taken after US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of new tariffs targeting European countries standing in support of Greenland. The incident prompted an immediate and collective response from the leaders of the 27-member EU countries and further escalated transatlantic tensions.
This will be the first time that the EU will consider implementing its Anti-Corrosion Instrument (ACI) i.e. Trade Bazooka. On Saturday, President Trump announced that starting February 1, a 10 percent tariff will be imposed on goods imported from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK. He warned that if there is no agreement on Greenland, the tariff will increase to 25 percent from June 1. Trump did not rule out the possibility of use of force, emphasizing the importance of Greenland to US security. These tariffs have been imposed in response to the support of European countries who supported Greenland.
meeting called in brussels
Trump’s decision created rapid tension in diplomatic relations, due to which an emergency meeting of representatives of European countries was called in Brussels on Sunday. Immediate steps and the future of US-EU relations were discussed in the meeting. French President Emmanuel Macron said after the meeting, ‘Now is the time for the EU to use its ‘trade bazooka’ for the first time.’ ‘Trade Bazooka’ refers to the Anti-Corrosion Instrument (ACI), which is designed to strengthen the EU’s security capacity against economic pressure from non-EU countries.
This big step can be taken
Under the ACI, the EU can take steps like retaliatory tariffs on America, limiting the access of American companies to the European Single Market and preventing American companies from taking big contracts from the EU. Its purpose is to send the message that the EU will protect its economic and political interests. Officials said the trade bazooka will not be limited to just tariffs, but export controls and additional restrictions could also be included in it.
EU will consider imposing retaliatory tariffs
In a report, Reuters reported that the EU will also consider imposing retaliatory tariffs worth 93 billion euros already announced, which were postponed until July 2025 due to a temporary trade deal with the US. European diplomatic sources described this as an unprecedented situation, as disputes with the US had never before prompted such decisive action. Next steps will depend on US-EU talks, but European leaders signaled they are prepared to take immediate action if the US continues or escalates its tariff threats.
Eight European countries issued a statement
Eight European countries issued a joint statement in support of Greenland on Sunday in response to Trump’s tariff threats. “We stand in full solidarity with the people of Denmark and Greenland,” the statement said. Also, emphasis was laid on common security interests in the Arctic. These NATO member countries said that they are committed to strengthening Arctic security as a transatlantic priority.
criticism of trump
European Council President Antonio Costa said the EU will take a firm stance to protect international law. At the same time, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that the tariffs would harm EU-US relations. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also criticized Trump over the phone on Sunday. He said that using tariffs against NATO allies regarding Greenland is wrong and could destabilize transatlantic relations. “Security in the High North is a priority for all NATO allies,” the Downing Street statement said. It would not be appropriate to impose tariffs on allies who are ensuring collective NATO security.
