Because Greenland has something that everyone wants. Be it gold reserves, rare minerals, oil or rare earth materials, everyone wants this. On top of that, due to global warming the ice is melting and new sea routes are being formed, which can reduce the distance between Asia, Europe and America. This will make business easier and whoever has control over Greenland will also have control over these routes.
What does Greenland want?
So everyone wants Greenland, but what does Greenland want? If you want to know this, you will have to ask the people living there, whose population is only 56 thousand. But Greenland is a part of Denmark, so Denmark has said that Greenland is not for sale. Other NATO countries have also said that Greenland is not for sale. Trump is angry with this and has immediately imposed a 10 percent tariff on NATO countries and has announced a 25 percent tariff from February 1 if no agreement is reached on Greenland.
France opens front against America
And the answer that has come from NATO will not be liked by Trump at all. Because NATO member country France has opened a front against America. French President Emmanuel Macron has told the entire European Union that now is the time to activate the European Union’s anti-coercion instrument. This ‘anti-coercion instrument’ is called the bazooka of the business world. A powerful weapon that activates when a country tries to exert economic pressure. When Trump put pressure on the European Union through the threat of tariffs, Macron demanded an ‘anti-coercion instrument’. If it becomes active then it will be seen as a retaliatory action by the European Union, through which the European Union can stop imports from America or impose new taxes. So now NATO countries have this one weapon, ‘anti-coercion instrument’, through which they want to neutralize Trump’s threat.
NATO gave another answer to Trump
The second answer given to Trump by NATO countries is Arctic Endurance. This is a military exercise, in which soldiers from 7 NATO countries have reached Greenland and have started military exercises. The countries that have sent their soldiers in this Arctic Endurance include soldiers from France, Germany, Britain, Norway, Netherlands, Finland and Sweden. Apart from this, Denmark also has soldiers. Through this military exercise, NATO countries only want to prove that NATO is united on the issue of Greenland.
But will this solidarity, this military exercise make any difference to America? The answer is no. The military exercise is very small. This includes 15 soldiers from France and 13 soldiers from Germany. Norway, Netherlands and Finland have only one soldier each. Sweden also has the same number. And the number of Danish soldiers present in Greenland is only 200. There are a total of 14 men in the dog sled patrolling team for patrolling the Arctic areas. In such a situation, there does not seem to be any specific purpose for this military exercise at present. Yes, it is definitely possible that NATO responds to America’s threat through this military exercise and in future, if the soldiers of every country have to unite against American attack, then the experience of military exercise can be useful for better coordination. NATO’s next plan is also to conduct a big military exercise. It has been named Operation Arctic Sentry, the purpose of which is to increase surveillance in Greenland and its surrounding areas and strengthen the power to respond military to any threat. However, it is not clear when this mission will start and for how many days it will last. And as far as war is concerned, without America, the soldiers of all NATO countries together cannot compete with the army of which Trump is the head.
NATO means America!
Because NATO has always meant America. Be it intelligence or satellite, logistics or missile defense, NATO cannot do anything without America. It can fight a war with any other country but NATO cannot fight a war with America. And when we know this, Trump will also know it very well. Therefore, it would hardly make any difference to Trump whether NATO’s small military exercise or big military exercise.
However, even the anti-coercion instrument will not make any difference to Trump. Because Trump knows very well that NATO countries will not be able to survive by implementing anti-coercion instrument and stopping imports from America. Apart from America, 60 percent of the weapons of the 31 NATO countries come from America. 55 to 60 percent of liquid petroleum gas comes from America alone. NATO countries are dependent on American companies like Microsoft and Google for cloud computing and data centers. America also has semiconductors. So NATO countries cannot stop imports through anti-coercion instrument even if they want to. Yes, they can do something like tariff for tariff, but that too does not seem to make much difference to America.
Who can save Greenland?
In such a situation, one thing is visible so far that if anyone can save Greenland, it is Russia and China. But if Russia and China get involved in this conflict, not only the map of NATO will change but also the map of the world will change, because then there will be a war and that war will be so big that it is impossible to even estimate the devastation caused by it.
