The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) officially declared 18 July as International Nelson Mandela Day in November 2009. The first official ceremony was held on 18 July 2010, Mandela’s 92nd birthday. The purpose of this day is to remind people that every person has the ability to bring positive change in the society.
Who was Nelson Mandela?
Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in Mwezo village, South Africa. He was the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 and became the country’s first black President. He fought a long struggle against apartheid and worked his whole life to provide equal rights to black people. During this struggle he also spent 27 years in jail, but did not step back from his principles. In the year 1993, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
