Donald Trump on Greenland: US President Donald Trump has once again publicly reiterated his intentions regarding control over Greenland. He warned European countries, especially Denmark, that additional tariffs would be imposed on them if they continued to resist America’s demands. Trump has also linked his tough stance on Greenland to perceived security threats posed by China and Russia.

President Trump said that after he was ignored for the Nobel Peace Prize, he now has no obligation to think only about peace. He also claimed that the world cannot be safe until Washington has control over Greenland.

complete silence on the use of force

Trump did not clarify whether he would use military force to gain control over Greenland. Even after talks with Denmark failed, the situation on this issue remains unclear. When asked directly in an interview with NBC whether he would use force to occupy Greenland, the US President simply said, “No comment.”

Europe advised to pay attention to Ukraine war

Trump said that Europe should focus on the Russia-Ukraine war instead of Greenland. He said, “Europe should pay attention to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine because frankly you have seen what they have got from it. He added, ‘Europe should focus on this issue, not on Greenland.’

Tariff announced on eight countries including Denmark

Stepping up his pressure tactics, Trump announced last Saturday that tariffs would be imposed on Denmark and seven other European countries unless an agreement was reached over US control of Greenland. 10 percent tariff will be applicable on Denmark and 7 percent tariff on other seven countries.

Change in policy due to not getting Nobel

Trump said in a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Storey that his perspective on global affairs has changed after the Nobel Committee’s decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize. In the letter, he wrote that he now “feels no obligation to think only about peace because Norway did not give him this award. Norway is also among the countries on which new tariffs have been imposed, which will come into effect from February 1.”

Norway claims control over Nobel Committee

Trump rejected the claim that the Norwegian government has no control over the decisions of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee. Speaking to NBC News, he said, “Norway completely controls it, no matter what they say. They say they have nothing to do with it, but everything is in their hands.” At the end of his statement, President Trump said, “I don’t care about the Nobel Prize.”
