Trump did not give up only after Greenland, took evil eye on India’s neighborhood too, spread his net till Diego Garcia

US President Donald Trump is once again in the news for his aggressive statements. While talking about increasing America’s dominance in the world, Trump has termed many international agreements and treaties as useless. Now their focus seems to be extending not only to Greenland but also to the Indian Ocean. In this series, Trump has started a new debate by making a big statement regarding Diego Garcia Island, the impact of which can be felt even in India.

Trump’s aggressive strategy started from Greenland
Donald Trump has already made it clear that he wants to bring Greenland under US control. For this he is continuously putting pressure on Denmark. Trump claims that Greenland is very important for America’s national security and if needed, the US military can take action there. Not only this, he has also given such statements regarding Canada and Venezuela, which have increased concern at the global level.

Trump angry at Diego Garcia
Along with Greenland, now Trump also has his eyes on Diego Garcia island located in the Indian Ocean. On the social media platform ‘Truth’, Trump sharply criticized Britain’s plan to hand over the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. Diego Garcia is also included in this group, where America and Britain have important military bases.

Britain accused of showing weakness
Trump said that Britain is handing over strategic islands like Diego Garcia to Mauritius without any solid reason. He called it ‘complete weakness’ and ‘gross stupidity’. Trump says that powers like China and Russia must have noticed this weakness. According to him, this is why it becomes necessary to bring areas like Greenland under America’s control.

Trump on Greenland and Diego Garcia
Trump clearly said in his statement that there are many reasons related to national security, which also includes acquiring Greenland. He appealed to Denmark and its European allies to ‘take the right decision’. Trump claims that under his leadership America is in a stronger and more respectable position than ever before.

Why is Diego Garcia so important?
Diego Garcia is the largest island of the Chagos Islands. A joint military base of America and Britain exists here since the 1960s. This base is considered extremely important for American military operations in the Middle East, South Asia and East Africa. In 1965, Britain separated Chagos from Mauritius and created ‘British Indian Ocean Territory’, after which thousands of local people were evacuated from there.

UK-Mauritius agreement and Trump’s U-turn
In May 2025, an important agreement was signed between Britain and Mauritius. Under this, the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands was handed over to Mauritius, while Britain got a 99-year lease on Diego Garcia. In return, Britain will give about 136 million dollars to Mauritius every year. This agreement is currently undergoing approval by the British Parliament.

Interestingly, the Trump administration had earlier supported this agreement. At that time, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had called it a big achievement. But now Trump has changed his stance, calling it a weakness.

Responding to Trump’s criticism, the British government said that this agreement has been made keeping in mind national security. According to Britain, due to some decisions of the courts the military base was in danger. With this agreement, the joint base of America and Britain will remain safe and America will continue to have full access there.

India’s important role
Although Trump did not name India in his statement, India is an important party in this entire incident. India has supported the UK-Mauritius agreement and is also providing assistance to Mauritius in area management. India has provided assistance worth about $680 million to Mauritius, which includes creation of marine protected areas, satellite stations and marine surveys.

India’s strategy on Indian Ocean
India views the Indian Ocean as its sphere of influence and has been opposing increasing militarization here, especially in view of China’s growing influence. If we look at history, during the Bangladesh War of 1971, America sent its seventh fleet to the Bay of Bengal, after which Diego Garcia was developed as a strategic center.

What will be the impact on India-US relations?
Today the defense relations between India and America are strong, but Trump’s recent statements can affect this balance. From Greenland to Diego Garcia, Trump’s aggressive policy is raising the question whether it will affect India’s interests in the future. Especially in the Indian Ocean region, where India’s strategic role is continuously increasing.
