US President Donald Trump has reached Switzerland on January 21, 2026. He has come to the World Economic Forum (WEF) to participate in the Davos conference. His journey was completed a little late because due to a problem with Air Force One, the plane had to return midway. From there he took another plane (Air Force C-32) and landed at Zurich Airport. There was a delay of about 2-3 hours from the original time.
What is Trump’s main focus in Davos?
Trump had earlier said that he would talk about the cost of living in America. But his demand to buy Greenland is the most discussed. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark and 7 other NATO allies (UK, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Finland). That means, from February 1, 10% tariff will be applicable on all goods. If the Greenland deal is not reached, tariffs will increase by 25% from June 1.
Trump says that Greenland is important for America for security, resource and strategic reasons. He has said that ‘we must have Greenland’ and ‘there will be no turning back.’
What did European leaders say on Trump’s statement?
- European Union Chief Ursula von der Leyen said that this is wrong and Europe will respond unitedly.
- French President Emmanuel Macron called Trump a bully and talked about taking strict steps against the tariffs.
- Denmark and Greenland flatly refused to make the deal and said that the people of Greenland would decide for themselves.
- NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the main issue is Ukraine, not Greenland.
- In Europe, Boeing is preparing to impose retaliatory tariffs on goods like whiskey and jeans.
What is Trump’s Board of Peace Plan?
Trump is promoting the Peace of Plan on the sidelines of Davos. This is a new group that will monitor the Israel-Hamas conflict and help in the reconstruction of Gaza. Trump has invited many countries, but European countries have not yet committed. Some reports say that this group may replace the United Nations (UN) in the future, but Trump said that the UN should continue.
