On January 22, 2026, Speaker UT Khadar, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, HK Patil, Priyank Kharge, Salim Ahmed and Basavaraj Horatti were waiting for Governor Thawarchand Gehlot in the Karnataka Assembly. Gehlot reached the House and started reading the speech paper. But after reading 2-4 lines, he put the paper down. He left the house. BK Hariprasad tried to stop them, but they did not stop.
Governor vs Government in Karnataka
The assembly session that started from January 22 is very special for Saddaramaiah. But even before this, Thaawarchand Gehlot had refused to address the joint session of the Assembly and the Legislative Council. Gehlot said that changes were necessary in some parts of the government’s prepared speech. This development sparked a new debate about constitutional traditions and the role of the Rajyapal. Actually, the Governor has objections to a total of 11 paragraphs of the speech prepared by the government. These include issues related to criticism of the policies of the central government. Gehlot said that these should be removed completely, whereas the government was ready to make limited changes in the language instead of removing them.
Today, because of this, the Governor ended his speech as soon as he started and left the House.
Minister Patil met Gehlot and celebrated
A delegation led by Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil went to Lok Bhavan and met the Governor. Minister Patil said that under Article 176 (1) of the Constitution, it is mandatory for the Governor to address the joint session and this speech is prepared by the Council of Ministers. If there is any objectionable language in the speech, the government can amend it, but removing the entire paragraph is not acceptable.
Even in Tamil Nadu, the Governor came out of the House.
On January 20, in Tamil Nadu too, Governor RN Ravi had left the assembly session midway and walked out. There was a heated clash between the Governor and the government on the very first day of the session. The Governor had demanded to play the national anthem after the Tamil anthem, which Speaker Appavu refused to accept. Governor RN Ravi alleged that the national anthem was insulted.
