The experience of an Indian NRI living in America has once again sparked a debate on the expensive healthcare system there. Parth Vijayvargiya, a resident of Jaipur and currently living in Arizona, USA, shared a video on social media and said that he had to pay about Rs 1.5 lakh ($1,800) from his own pocket for just a 90-minute emergency room (ER) visit.
This incident happened when he got injured while ice-skating. Despite being in pain, he avoided calling an ambulance because the cost of ambulance service is very high in America, and drove himself to the hospital.
American medical system exposed
According to Parth, his treatment in the hospital lasted for about one and a half hours. About three weeks after the treatment, he received a bill from his insurance company, stating that the total cost of the treatment was approximately $5,800. Of this, about $4,000 (about Rs 3.6 lakh) was covered by the insurance, but he had to pay the remaining $1,800 himself.
Parth said in the video that this is the reason why America is called an expensive country and that is why salaries are also high there. His video quickly went viral and thousands of people reacted to it.
On social media, people compared this experience with India’s healthcare system. Many users praised the availability of Indian doctors and the effectiveness of treatment, while some wrote that the high salary in America sounds good until life itself pays its bill. Some people also said that in America “high income” and “high expenditure” are two sides of the same coin.

In another conversation, Parth told that he is originally from Jaipur and along with being a civil engineer, he is also a digital content creator. He has done his Masters in Construction Management in America and is currently earning a lower six-figure salary. Parth says that life in America is easy in many respects, but the expenses are also equally high.
He advised people to decide to shift to America only when their financial background is strong. However, he also admitted that despite all these facilities, he misses his family in India a lot.
