Every year on 23 January, the entire country celebrates the birth anniversary of the great freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose as ‘Parakram Diwas’. The Government of India had officially declared this day as Valor Day in the year 2021, to honor Netaji’s indomitable courage, discipline and his selfless sacrifice for the nation.
Netaji’s life, his thoughts and his struggle still inspire people, and that is why his story has been coming back again and again in cinema and television. The Bengali film ‘Subhash Chandra’, released in 1966, is considered to be one of the first films made on Netaji’s life.
This film was directed by Piyush Bose and Samar Kumar played the role of Subhash Chandra Bose. The film depicts his childhood, studies, college life and experiences related to the Indian Civil Services Examination. This story tells how a brilliant student gradually became a revolutionary who left everything for the freedom of the country. His early life was brilliantly presented in a simple and emotional style.
One of the most popular films made on Netaji is ‘Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero’, which was released in the year 2004. This film was directed by famous filmmaker Shyam Benegal. Sachin Khedekar played the role of Netaji in the film, while Divya Dutta was seen in an important role.
The story focuses on the period from 1941 to 1945, when Netaji escaped from house arrest, formed Azad Hind Fauj with Germany and Japan and fought a decisive battle against British rule. War, politics and personal struggles have been shown with great sensitivity in the film. The web series ‘Bose: Dead/Alive’, released in the year 2017, kept the mystery related to Netaji’s death at the centre. Produced by Ekta Kapoor, this series was directed by Pulkit and Rajkumar Rao played the role of Netaji in it.
The series was based on writer Anuj Dhar’s book ‘India’s Biggest Cover-up’. The story raises the question whether Netaji really died in the Taiwan plane crash, or the truth is something else. The Bengali TV series ‘Netaji’ aired in the year 2019 was also based on the early phase of his life. Abhishek Bose played the role of Netaji in this series and it was shown on Zee Bangla channel. The story shows those days in Cuttack and Kolkata, when the spark of patriotism lit in the mind of Subhash Chandra Bose and he transformed from an ordinary student to an extraordinary leader. This series was especially made keeping in mind the youth and children, so that they can understand the story of Netaji in simple language.
The Bengali film ‘Gumnami’, released this year, touched the most mysterious aspect of Netaji’s life. The film was directed by Srijit Mukherjee and Prosenjit Chatterjee played the role of Netaji. In the film, the hearing of Justice Mukherjee Commission and the questions related to it have been shown in an emotional and mysterious manner.
