What is merchant navy?
Merchant Navy is the field in which work is done on cargo ships, tankers, container ships and passenger ships. These ships carry goods and passengers from one country to another. People working in the Merchant Navy stay at sea and take care of the operation, machinery, navigation and safety of the ship.
What studies are required to join Merchant Navy after 10th?
If a student has passed 10th and wants to join Merchant Navy, then he must have passed 10th with Maths and Science subjects. After 10th, usually students can do courses like GP Rating (General Purpose Rating), in which basic training of both deck and engine is given. This course opens the way for entry-level jobs on ships. Students who want to become officers later, study Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) in 12th and then do diploma or degree course.
Eligibility for Merchant Navy
To make a career in Merchant Navy, it is necessary for the candidate to have passed 10th or 12th, in which Mathematics and Science subjects are considered compulsory. Generally the age limit for entry into this field is kept between 17 to 25 years. It is also very important to be physically fit, because working on a ship is challenging. The candidate’s eyesight should be 6/6 and he should not have color blindness. Additionally, before joining the Merchant Navy, it is mandatory to pass a medical fitness test from a government recognized doctor to ensure that the individual can work safely in maritime conditions.
Working hours in merchant navy
Merchant Navy job is not like a normal office job. Here the work is done as per the contract of the ship, which can be of 4 to 9 months. The working time in a day is decided according to the shift. After this, a long leave is also available, which is considered a special feature of this career.
How much salary do you get in Merchant Navy?
Merchant Navy salary is considered to be the biggest attraction of this career. Initially, when a student completes his training and starts working on a ship, he can get a salary of around Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000 per month. As experience increases and ranks rise, the salary increases rapidly and within a few years it can reach Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh per month. At the same time, on becoming senior posts like Chief Officer, Chief Engineer or Captain, the salary can be Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh per month or even more. The special thing is that in many cases the income of merchant navy is tax-free, which makes this career even more financially attractive.
