Amid the ongoing controversy over the rules of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Bharatiya Janata Party is now being surrounded by its own MPs. Bar Council of India President and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra has raised questions on the need for these rules.
On the new regulation of UGC, BJP MP in Rajya Sabha and Chairman of Bar Council of India, Manan Kumar Mishra said, ‘It is not right to drag educational institutions into controversies. A controversy has been created which was completely unnecessary.
He said, ‘There are strict laws against ragging. But what I suspect, and what people are not saying openly, is that after these regulations, educational institutions will become a hotbed of controversies. Irrespective of the caste the students belong to, they have come there to study and they have been given the freedom to do whatever happens, even a small fight – to complain and spoil someone’s life. So, there was no need for it. I think UGC should reconsider this. The government should also think about this.
What is happening in Delhi and UP on UGC?
Amidst all this, protests took place in Aligarh, Sambhal, Kushinagar and other districts of Uttar Pradesh against the new rules of the University Grants Commission (UGC), in which student groups and organizations alleged caste-based discrimination in higher educational institutions. In Aligarh, student protesters stopped the convoy of Hathras Bharatiya Janata Party MP Anup Pradhan at the district collectorate and demanded immediate withdrawal of the new UGC rules.
Along with this, a group of students from various colleges of Delhi protested outside the headquarters of the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Tuesday and said that the new rules issued by the Commission could lead to anarchy in the campuses. At least 100 students took part in the protest amid large number of barricades and heavy rain.
