Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Malaysia, has described India as a reliable partner for development. He said that this is reflected in the recent trade agreements with various countries including Britain, America and the European Union.
Addressing the Indian community in Kuala Lumpur at an event, PM Modi on Saturday (February 7, 2026) said that the Indian diaspora works as a strong bridge between India and Malaysia. Referring to the trade agreements signed by India with various countries, the Prime Minister said that India is seen as a reliable partner for development.
He said that Britain, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Australia, New Zealand, Oman, European Union (EU) and America have trade agreements with India and trust has become India’s strongest currency.
Malaysian PM and I have been friends since before becoming Prime Minister- Modi
PM Modi said, ‘We understand each other very well, the reason for this will be the large number of similar words present in our languages and the Malay language. I am grateful for the affection of the Indian expatriates in Kuala Lumpur. Our expatriate community has been working as a strong bridge between India and Malaysia.
He said that he is very happy to be in Malaysia, which is his first foreign visit in 2026. He said, ‘Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and I have been friends even before he became Prime Minister.’
PM Modi said, ‘India will always welcome you with an open heart. That is why, just a few months ago, we have taken a historic decision and declared Malaysian citizens of Indian origin eligible for OCI card up to the sixth generation.
Indian Consulate will open in Malaysia
Modi said in a post on In the coming time, an Indian Consulate will also be opened in Malaysia, which will bring our nations even closer.
More than 500 schools in Malaysia teach children in Indian languages – Modi
He said, ‘Tamil migrants living in Malaysia are serving the society in various fields. Actually, Tamil migrants have been living here for many centuries. Inspired by this history, we are proud to establish the Thiruvalluvar Chair at the University of Malaya. Now we will set up a Thiruvalluvar center to further strengthen our common heritage.
Modi said that Malaysia has the second largest community of people of Indian origin in the world and there are many things that connect the hearts of Indians and Malaysians. He said that I had recently shared with 1.4 billion Indians during my Mann Ki Baat program that more than 500 schools in Malaysia teach children in Indian languages.
India’s success is the success of Malaysia and Asia- Modi
PM Modi said, ‘India’s success is the success of Malaysia and it is the success of Asia. That is why I say that the guiding word of our relations is impact. IMPACT means India-Malaysia partnership to advance collective change.
Modi also urged Indians and people of Indian origin to travel to India and experience India. He said, ‘You will have to bring your Malay friends along also. Because contact between people is the cornerstone of our friendship.

At the same time, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on this occasion, ‘I am personally excited to have a good friend from India joining us in Malaysia.’ He recalled the ancient relations between the two countries. He said, ‘India is one of the major trading partners of Malaysia. Not only do we exchange goods between us, but more than 15 lakh Indian tourists came to Malaysia in 2025. He said that I am proud to be a friend of Modi ji and India.
