Prime Minister Narendra Modi is receiving congratulations from all over the world for setting a new record of serving as the elected Prime Minister for the longest continuous period in the history of India. In this sequence, Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay wrote an emotional letter in honor of Prime Minister Modi, calling him his ‘friend, elder brother and guide’.
Tobgay started his speech by appreciating the confidence reposed in PM Narendra Modi. He wrote, ‘After assuming the responsibility of the post of Prime Minister for the first time on May 26, 2014, Narendra Modi has written a new chapter in the political history of India by completing his tenure of 4,399 days. This is an important moment not only for India but for the entire world, which reflects the confidence reposed again and again in its leader by the world’s largest democracy.
The Bhutanese Prime Minister said that for him this achievement is not just a political record, but an opportunity to remember a relationship that has grown stronger over the years. He wrote that he sees Prime Minister Modi as a close friend, elder brother and a mentor whose commitment to public service constantly inspires him.
Referring to their first meeting in 2014, he said, ‘I met Prime Minister Modi for the first time at his swearing-in ceremony. In the very first meeting, his intimacy and simplicity impressed me. Later this formal introduction turned into a deep friendship.

He reminded that after becoming Prime Minister, Modi had chosen Bhutan for his first foreign visit. According to Tobgay, this decision was a clear message of the special relationship between the two countries and Modi’s affection for Bhutan. The Bhutanese Prime Minister said that over the years various issues related to development, governance, regional challenges and society have been discussed between the two leaders. Through these interactions, he has closely witnessed Modi’s foresight, leadership ability, humility and amazing art of connecting with people.
Referring to PM Modi’s simple life, Tobgay further wrote, ‘Despite his busy schedule, Prime Minister Modi always asks about the well-being of my family and children and also shares his experiences regarding health, yoga and balanced lifestyle. These human qualities make our friendship stronger.
Bhutan’s PM revealed the reason for calling his Indian counterpart as elder brother. He said, “In South Asian culture, ‘Braai Bhai’ is not only a person who is older in age, but also a person who provides guidance, stands with him in difficult times and shares happiness even in success. He has always seen such an elder brother in Prime Minister Modi.”
He described bilateral relations as based on trust, respect and cooperation. Claimed that this friendship has become stronger under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. He expressed confidence that the partnership between the two countries will continue to establish new dimensions of peace, prosperity and shared development in the future also.
