Madhuri Dixit played the role of Chandramukhi in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 film ‘Devdas’. Now the actress has shared her experience of working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. This film is still counted among the most visually rich and classics of Hindi cinema. Regarding Bhansali, who is often compared with veteran filmmakers like Guru Dutt and Raj Kapoor for his grand cinematic vision, Madhuri says that he mixed poetry not only on the screen but also in the entire process of filmmaking.
How was Chandramukhi’s character?
Talking about her character of Chandramukhi, Madhuri described it as very layered and emotionally rich. He said, ‘I enjoyed working with Bhansali ji very much. Chandramukhi was a very important character in the film. Not just the dance moves, but every scene of the film feels like poetry.
The actress further told that Chandramukhi’s journey reminds her of Meera Bai. Madhuri shared, ‘There is an innate innocence within him. She is exactly like Meera, because she loves a man whom she knows will never be able to love her back. So we wanted to capture that passion, those small expressions that come out through language and emotions. The experience of working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali was very beautiful.

shot in heavy lehenga
The actress shared the incident during the iconic song Kahe Chhed Chhed Mujhe. Recalling that heavy costume, Madhuri told that the ghagra she wore was very heavy. He told, ‘It was made of real velvet and real embroidery work was done on it. The use of real pearls made it even heavier. She further told that the weight of the costume was so much that even when she stopped moving, the ghagra would automatically keep rotating around her.
Despite all these challenges, Madhuri believes that all the hard work was completely worth it. He said, ‘When you see him on screen, his attention to detail, the way he shoots each scene, it feels like it was completely worth it.’
Talking about Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s perfectionist image and often being called a ‘taskmaster’, the actress presented a different picture. He said, ‘People call him a taskmaster, but when we were working together, he was very sweet on the set. He used to say only one thing, give me a little magic.
These days, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is busy shooting his next directorial film Love and War. Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal will be seen in important roles in this.
