A major change has been made in the rules related to ration cards in the capital Delhi. The Food Supply and Consumer Affairs Department of Delhi Government has issued a new notification. Under this, the income criteria for making and issuing ration cards has been increased. Earlier the annual income limit was Rs 1 lakh, now it has been increased to Rs 1.20 lakh per year.
To put it in simple language, now only those families will be considered eligible for ration card, whose total annual income is up to Rs 1 lakh 20 thousand. Families whose income is more than this will not get the benefit of the government ration scheme. This change may affect thousands of families.
They will get benefits
The new system is expected to provide relief to those poor and needy families whose ration cards were not being made due to their income being slightly more than the earlier limit. With the increased income limit, such families will now be able to get wheat, rice and other essential food items at cheaper prices. This is especially likely to benefit the labor class, daily wage workers and small shopkeepers.

Whereas families whose annual income is more than Rs 1.20 lakh will remain out of the scope of this scheme. Such families will not get government ration. The government says that its objective is to ensure that the benefits of subsidy reach the right and needy people.
These will be given priority
It has also been made clear in the new rules that the head of the family in the ration card will be considered to be the person who takes charge of the family and in whose name the documents are registered. Usually this person is the earning member of the family. Female headed families will also be given priority as before.
Lakhs of people get cheap ration
Under the Public Distribution System (PDS) in Delhi, cheap ration is given to lakhs of people. From time to time the government keeps making changes in it so that those taking benefits wrongly can be stopped and help can reach the poor. Under the National Food Security Act of the Central Government, states have also been given the right to check eligibility and decide rules.

Those who feel they are eligible as per the new income limit can apply at their nearest ration office or online portal. Already, ration card holders have also been advised to update their income related documents on time, so that there is no problem in future.
