First Sport On Moon: Whenever we think of the Moon, we imagine scientific experiments, space exploration and historic first steps. But do you know that a game has been played on the moon also. In fact, the only game played on the moon was golf. This memorable moment in the history of space was created by American astronaut Ellen Shepherd.

Historic moment in the history of space

This unique incident happened on 6 February 1971 during the NASA-led mission Apollo 14. While experimenting on the surface of the moon, Shepherd decided to do something that had never been done before. It was like playing a golf shot on the moon. This is the first and only time that a game was played outside Earth.

A makeshift golf club on the moon

Shepherd did not take the entire golf kit into space. Instead, he cleverly attached the head of a 6-iron golf club to the handle of the lunar sample collection tool. This improvised setup became the first golf club used outside Earth. It is said that he hid the club head and two golf balls inside his space suit without informing NASA in advance.

Two swing in heavy space suits

Playing golf on the moon was not as easy as it sounds. The heavy spacesuit restricted movement, making it difficult to swing properly. Due to low flexibility, Shepherd used only one hand to take the shot. He hit two golf balls.

How far did the ball actually go?

It is said that the ball actually traveled 40 yards. Those two white golf balls are still lying on the Moon’s Fra Mauro surface where Shepherd left them. Shepherd brought the head of the golf club back to Earth. Beyond science and discovery, this event is special because it showed a lighter side of astronautics. Shepherd’s golf shot on the moon is remembered not only as a sporting feat but also as proof that human curiosity and playfulness follow us wherever we go.
