A question often arises in the minds of high blood pressure patients whether fish oil or Omega 3 supplements can be taken along with BP medicines. There is confusion in people’s minds regarding fish oil which is considered beneficial for heart health. Regarding this, cardiologists say that in most cases fish oil supplement can be taken along with BP medicines, but doctor’s advice is necessary for this. Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation in blood cells, increase the flexibility of arteries and reduce triglyceride levels. Some research also suggests that it can be helpful in reducing blood pressure to a mild level.
No conflict with medicines, but caution necessary
According to experts, fish oil generally does not negate the effect of BP controlling drugs like ACE inhibitors, ARBs, calcium channel blockers, beta blockers and diuretics. Therefore it can be taken as support supplements. However, if a person’s blood pressure is already controlled by medicines, then adding fish oil can bring the BP down a little further. In most people this does not become a serious problem, but in the elderly or those taking many medicines, blood pressure may fall excessively. In such a situation, symptoms like dizziness, feeling lightheaded while standing or fainting may be seen.
Excessive dosage may increase the risk of bleeding.
Fish oil has a mild blood-thinning effect. Supplements taken in normal amounts are generally considered safe, but taking more than 3 grams of EPA and DHA daily may increase the risk of bleeding. This is especially important for those who are already taking aspirin or other blood thinner medicines. Whereas in many fish oil capsules, 1000 mg fish oil is written. But the actual amount of Omega-3 in them is only about 300 mg. This quantity is considered safe for normal heart health. To have a significant effect on high triglycerides or blood pressure, higher doses should be taken only under the supervision of a doctor.
Quality of supplement also matters
Omega-3 fatty acids can be affected by heat, light and air. If the supplement has been stored properly or is close to expiry, its quality may deteriorate and the taste may be off-putting or bitter. Apart from this, the ability to absorb Omega-3 in the body can also vary. Despite being written in the same quantity, it is not necessary that the effect of two supplements be the same. Apart from this, the doctor clearly says that fish oil is not an alternative to BP medicines. Regular exercise, balanced weight, low salt intake, limited alcohol and stress control are the most effective ways to control high blood pressure.
