Russia-Ukraine War: It has now been 4 years since the Russia-Ukraine war. An operation that Moscow initially described as a special military operation was expected to last only a few weeks. But even after about 1460 days this war continues. As this war is prolonging, the number of deaths is also increasing. Although it is difficult to verify the exact numbers, some independent research groups and international organizations provide estimates that help show the bigger picture.
total military casualties
According to assessments collected from Independent Research Institutions and Western defense analysts, total military casualties, i.e. the total number of people killed, injured or missing, are estimated to be around 2 million. Although this number is very high, experts warn that it shows the total loss suffered in the fierce fighting that lasted on many fronts for 4 years.
Russian military losses
According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, Russia has lost a total of about 1.2 million soldiers since the start of the attack. The number of deaths in this figure is estimated to be between 2,30,000 to 4,30,000. The Center for Strategic and International Studies and the British weekly journal The Economist estimate that about 18 lakh people have been casualties in this conflict. Ukrainian military officials claim that Russia has suffered huge losses.
Ukrainian military losses
Ukraine has also suffered a lot. Independent Western estimates suggest that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have suffered a total of between 5 lakh and 6 lakh casualties. This includes injured and missing people. Some reports about the deaths estimate that between 1 lakh and 2 lakh Ukrainian soldiers may have been killed. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly confirmed the official death toll of approximately 55,000 soldiers.
civilian casualties
The number of human deaths has been very high. According to the United Nations, at least 15,172 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since the war began. These include more than 760 children. The United Nations emphasizes that the real figure is probably much higher. This is because many deaths that occurred in occupied or highly disputed areas have still not been verified.
Demographic studies show that the war has had a profound impact on Russia’s male population of military age. Some estimates suggest that one in every 25 Russian men aged 18–49 was killed or seriously injured during the fighting.
