To become an officer in the Indian Navy, one has to go through a national level selection process. Candidates get training from institutes like National Defense Academy and Naval Academy. Whereas in Merchant Navy it is necessary to have Physics, Chemistry and Maths in 12th. After this, training is given as a cadet which can last for about 18 months. Merchant Navy is considered more attractive in terms of earnings. At entry level the salary can be around Rs 25000 to Rs 85000 per month. In this, third officer and second officer earn around Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh per month. The same Chief of Officer earns Rs 4 to 6 lakh per month, while a Captain or Engineer earns around Rs 8.65 lakh to Rs 20 lakh per month. Apart from this, if an employee works in international waters for more than 183 days in a year, he can also get tax relief. If we talk about the Indian Navy, the salary in the Indian Navy is decided by the Government of India. The starting salary as a Short Term Service Commission Officer is around Rs 1.10 lakh per month. Apart from this, after completion of training, extra allowance, house rent allowance, medical facilities and other government allowances are available.
