The answer to why men have nipples lies in the early stages of human evolution. Actually, the initial structure of male and female embryos in the womb is similar. For the first few weeks, the genetic blueprint of both remains the same. During this time, many parts of the body start forming, including nipples. Let us find out why nature did not remove it.
Y chromosome and development of the male body
About six to seven weeks after conception, the Y Chromosome becomes active, which causes the embryo to begin developing in the male direction. Testes develop first. This organ later produces and stores sperm. Along with this, testosterone hormone starts being produced, which determines the identity of the male body. From about the ninth week, this hormone brings about changes in the development of the genitals and brain of the fetus. But the thing to note is that nipples develop even before the Y Chromosome becomes active, hence they remain in the male body.
What is a vestigial organ?
In scientific language, men’s nipples are called vestigial organs. It means an organ which has no special use in the present body. According to Ian Tattersall, nipples are not associated with any essential metabolic activity in men. Even if these are not there, there will be no significant impact on the functioning of the body.
Do nipples have any function in men?
Breastfeeding through nipples is not possible in men, because there are no hormonal changes in their body that happen in women. In men, breast tissue is present, but it is not developed. For this reason, it is considered a part of the body which remains, but does not play an active role.
More such organs in the body
Nipples are not the only example. There are many organs in the human body which have limited or almost no use today. Like appendix, wisdom teeth and the last part of the spinal cord which is called tailbone. These organs remained in the process of evolution, but their importance has decreased with time.
important thing for common people
Having nipples in men is not a sign of any disease or abnormality. This is completely natural and part of the normal biological process. These exist because the initial structure of the embryo is similar and later there are changes depending on the sex.
