The strike of workers at the Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) refinery located in Panipat, Haryana raises many serious questions. 12 hour duty, delay in salary and lack of basic facilities are unjust conditions for any worker. Workers are demanding not just wages, but respectable working conditions and human rights. Kumari Selja, who is associated with the Indian National Congress, described it as ‘slave-like behaviour’. I believe that 12 hours of continuous duty is appropriate only when proper pay, rest and facilities are ensured, otherwise it would amount to labor exploitation.
